Ray was the second General Aviation pilot that I met after moving to South Carolina almost 10 years ago. Thanks to EAA242 president of membership at the time, Jim Herpst, for the introduction that led to a long lasting friendship. Ray let me visit many mornings during his construction of 4 airplanes. I offered my help when his eyes and aged hands failed him. More than that however, he taught me as much as anyone I’ve ever learned anything about airplanes from. He inspired me to start construction of my own Christavia project from plans he gave me. His workshop offered a welcome retreat from the stresses and the media in the days that immediately followed September 11th.
