We pause for a moment of silence to mourn the passing of our good friend and fellow pilot Earl Yerrick, from Columbia, South Carolina. Earl passed away this morning following a long illness. 10-18-2011

We arrived safe and sound at the Hangar Hotel on Thursday.  After unloading and checking in, we took a cab into town for dinner.  We left today (Friday) 12:30 PM after eating at the Airport Cafe located next to the Hangar Hotel, and arrived at 1N1 airpark at 3:00.  We are going to go to the balloon festival some time later next week.  Video to follow later.

First test with the 808 micro camera was on the top of the vertical fin.  This time I attached it to the bottom of the plane.  Short hop to Pelion for gas. To see it in HD, you need to click on the 360p and change it to 1080P.

FAA Approves Use of “Very Low Lead” Fuel

In a Special Airworthiness Bulletin issued last week, the FAA has approved a new fuel—100VLL (very low lead)—for use on aircraft currently operating on 100LL. The approval was the result of collaboration with industry partners on the ASTM International task force that evaluated data supporting the incorporation of grade 100VLL into specification D910. The new fuel is identical to 100LL in all aspects, except that the maximum lead content is reduced by about 19 percent. The FAA determined that 100 VLL meets all of the performance requirements of grades 80, 91, 100, and 100LL and will perform identically in existing aircraft and engines. The fuel also has the same minimum octane rating and provides the same level of anti-knock performance as 100LL and 100 avgas grades. Since the ASTM D910 standard specifies blue coloration for both grade 100VLL avgas and grade 100LL avgas, these fuels will appear identical.

Dear Whiteplains neighbors:

The last time we all had breakfast in our hangar was when we celebrated the arrival of Spring. High time for a new season bite!

Our hangar is wide open for breakfasteers on Sunday October 2, starting at 8 – or make that 7:30 for those who have the Camden fly-in on their schedule. Come and wish your neighbors a happy Autumn!

That's breakfast in Alice and Willem 's hangar, Sunday morning Oct. 2, starting at 7:30!

On the menu: hot pancakes, biscuits, scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, grits, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, orange juice, and a surprise.

Bring your kids, your neighbors, your parents, your guests, and that includes everyone that you have brought to previous breakfasts! The more the merrier!

The heli deli closes at 9:30. Walk in at any time between 7:30 – 9:30 AM.

RSVPs are encouraged, but last-minute walk-ins are just as welcome! If you park across the runway, be careful crossing.

We are looking forward to welcoming Fall together with y'all.

Our own John Gardner is on a trip out west and sends the following pictures to share with us.   If you look in the back ground behind John, you'll see the Air Walk Bridge that over looks the Grand Canyon. 

Product test 808 spy camera

Test flight using the 808 Spy Cam that I got from  www.meritline.com . You can get one for $8.99 when it's on sale, plus another $10 bucks for the micro sd card. Be sure to get the class 10 card to prevent frame drops. It takes up to a 8 gb, but the battery only lasts for about 4 gb. (49 mins max out of mine.)  Looks like a car key remote.  The sound is really good except when it is tapped to the tail of a Mooney going 150 mph. Takes 720 X 480 HD video, and 1280 X 960 stills.   On this flight I went just before sunset to Pelion for a gas run.  Gas was $5.25.

Until recently, Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs) were typically thought of as large computer devices mounted in the cockpits of high-end jets and airliners. They usually relied on a permanent mounting fixture, and needed to be hard-wired into the aircraft’s electrical system. Once installed, these EFBs provided electronic charts, moving map displays and weather in the cockpit. While they could be adapted to general aviation aircraft, the costs usually outweighed the benefits, and they never really gained widespread popularity. During this time consumer electronics manufacturers sold more affordable, tablet-based computers that could be modified to serve as an EFB, but it took a lot of work on the pilot’s end to load software and string around wires in the cockpit.

I really wish people would stop messing with our GPS.

First LightSquared proposed (and the FCC conditionally accepted) a network for terrestrial broadband Internet that would have destroyed GPS navigation throughout the United States. In defense of LightSquared, however, it did say that in order to head off most interference issues, it would be happy to let pilots install elaborate filters in their GPS devices — at the pilots' expense, of course — to overcome the interference the LightSquared network would cause. That is very thoughtful of LightSquared.

New FAA Web Site Targets Midair Collisions A new web site hosted by the FAA in conjunction with the Department of Defense aims to provide general aviation pilots with information about operations in military airspace. "This portal will allow users to find and link to all existing military Mid-Air Collision Avoidance (MACA) programs in a single web site, while also enjoying new access to information from military bases that did not previously have web-based content," the FAA said on Wednesday. "Our goal is to eliminate mid-air collisions and reduce close calls through continuous flight safety and proper flight planning." The site, SeeAndAvoid.org, is designed for ease of use, with lots of Google maps and graphics. Data is included from the MACA programs of all DoD aviation installations in the continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, the Virgin Islands, Guam and Puerto Rico. Since 1978, there has been an average of 30 midair collisions in the U.S. each year, the FAA said, resulting in an average of 75 deaths per year. There are also over 450 near-collisions reported each year. As recently as February 2006, a civilian pilot was killed when his airplane crashed after colliding with an Air Force jet. The FAA noted that some military action may not be displayed at the new site, so pilots must still be cautious when flying in airspace that might be used by military aircraft. A user's guide to the web site will be available later this summer, the FAA said.

FLS Microjet completes Phase 1 flight testing

The BD-Micro Technologies (BMT) FLS Microjet completed Phase I flight testing May 5. All performance expectations were either met or exceeded, according to company officials, who say the jet is better known as the “James Bond jet.”

To all Advanced Helicopter Friends and Associates:

                The 2^nd anniversary of the crash that claimed the lives of two employees of Advanced and two friends working with the Advanced Helicopter Youth Foundation (AHYF) is about four weeks away. Since that fateful day in 2009 the Foundation has struggled to keep going, for obvious reasons.

We were looking for a way to get some wind under the wings when I was contacted by Dan Hart, Jeff Nordaas’ brother. Jeff was the pilot who perished in the accident. He informed me that he and his brothers were organizing a Memorial Golf Tournament in Jeff’s honor and that the proceeds would be donated to the Foundation to continue Jeff’s work!

This has been an answer to our/my prayers for the future of our charitable work. I feel that Jeff’s brothers setting this beautiful example and pushing forward has given all of us the push and the drive that we so urgently needed. Their example is so much appreciated!

I’m asking all employees, associates and customers of Advanced Helicopter to participate in whatever manner they can. I would love to see as many play in the tournament as possible. If you cannot or do not want to play, you may want to sponsor a hole or donate to the cause in some way. Please visit the link below and give your support.

WPI : Bulletin - Car crashes through fence, driver flees in another truck

Last night, just before the rains came, a driver of Hispanic description, fled the scene in another truck after losing control of his SUV.  Skid marks show that the driver was heading east on Golden Jubilee road and spun out just before missing the curve sign plowing through Bob Gillmann's fence.

Windy Road Cleanup 6-18-2011

This past Saturday, a number of our Whiteplains neighbors gathered for roadside cleanup. No…………our neighborhood roads and streets are NOT littered, but the road that leads to our airport does manage to collect a fair amount of trash.

One - of a Hundred and One

Our very own Alice, has just become a member of a very special club for women pilots ( fixed wing and helicopter ) rating.  A feat that is not easily achieved. 

Friday she became one of only 100 or so women pilots in America who are licensed to fly both helicopters and airplanes.

Alice was already an FAA licensed helicopter pilot since 2008. Yesterday she also became a fixed wing pilot, FAA licensed to fly airplanes.

As the attached photo of Alice illustrates, there are about 900 civilian women helicopter pilots in the U.S. But only roughly 100 of them can also fly a plane. Alice is now one of that elite crowd of dual rated fly girls.

One reason why this is so rare is that flying rotorcraft is at crucial times intuitively the opposite of flying fixed wing aircraft. At essential moments during flight the key inputs are opposite, which is especially urgent during landings and emergency procedures. It makes the transition from one to the other treacherous, and it explains why few pilots even try.

Friday, she passed her FAA airplane flight exam.  Way to go, Alice.

Fire Department Get Together

Our neighborhood hosted a dinner cookout for our local firefighters, who were doing a training exercise and updating our neighborhood assessment.

Willem cooked burgers and dogs for us on Jim Wheat’s 747 size grille, and our neighbors brought food to share. The 25-30 firefighters had a great time, were well fed, and enjoyed touring the hangar/homes and several stand alone hangars. Our thanks to Willem and Alice for the use of their hangar and to all of the neighbors who joined us for fine dining. Note two tanks on the grille.

SCBC Cash Winner for 5-1-2011

Jim Wheat won the South Carolina Lottery at the South Carolina Breakfast Club at Broxton Bridge this morning. Rumors that Jim won enough money to buy breakfast for everyone next week at Whiteplains are still being verified.

Vidalia Onion Festival - Vidalia, Ga.

While folks at Whiteplains enjoyed the Gilber Fire Department BBQ, the Rainwater's and the Cook's managed to fly over to Vidalia, Georgia for the Onion Festival.  They had an excellent turn out and you could not of asked for a nicer day.  They put on an outstanding air show with many planes of all kinds, even a B2 Bomber and A-10. A few pictures below.
