Note from: Phil Rainwater

Phil Rainwater wanted us to see what he's been up to this past weekend in Wisconsin. He managed to get some Cessna 172 time in on floats.
Way to go Phil, nothing like landing on water!
Nice pictures, thanks for sharing them.

Tops down and ready to head out!
A few of us got together this past weekend to have a nice drive with the tops down (sorry Ken & Peg) to Prosperity for lunch at Yoders. It was a gorgeous day and the place we ate at had much to select from at a fair price. Main item & two sides plus drink for $6.95.

Landing Fees at (JZI)

John Gardner and Bill Como visited Charleston Executive (JZI) in South Carolina on Saturday, 9-12-09. They have a mandatory landing fee of $40. unless you purchase 15 gallons of 100LL at $5.98 gallon. Evidently the Atlantic Aviation Corporation has leased the public airport and these fees apply. Also please pass this on to EAA Chapter 242.

Thanks
Bill

Whiteplains 10 Year Celebration

I think everyone had a great time at the Cargile's to celebrate Whiteplains Ten Year milestone last night. Thanks go to everyone that made it a hit and to Niel and Nancy for having the courage to plan and develop Whiteplains into the premier flying community that it is today.

Gone Flying - (0A9) Elizabethton, TN

The Rainwater's joined the Cook's on a trip back to Johnson City, Tn. where they once owned a lot on top of Campbell, Mt. just outside of Elizabethton. This is where the Cook's planned to retire, until they came across Whiteplains Plantation. We got to meet one of our old neighbors, Rose. Her husband, Don was off fishing. We got to see our old lot that now has a very big house on it. We also managed to tour downtown Elizabethton, which the girls really enjoyed, since the streets where lined with all kinds of shops. Of course, we had lunch before we went shopping.
If your looking for a nice place to fly to, consider Elizabethton, while it is in a valley, with mountains all around, it isn't that hard to get into. Runway 24 is the preferred runway.

Photoshow below.

Update - Whiteplains 10th Anniversary

Whiteplains 10th Anniversary Celebration
Wednesday, September 9, 2009

Can you believe it has been 10 years since the FAA assigned our official FAA airport identifier – SC99.

It is time to celebrate. The 10th anniversary celebration to honor Niel and Nancy’s grand vision will be Wednesday, September 9, 2009, from 7 to 9 pm. A Free BBQ dinner will be provided, with a champagne toast (and a non-alcoholic alternative) to cap off the evening.

There will be door prizes and we will be treated to a show featuring the early days at Whiteplains, including runway construction. If you have any old photos to share, get them to Don Cook by September 6.

In order to have the correct amount of food, we must know how many of our friends and neighbors will participate.

If you have not already made reservations, please confirm by return e-mail to Steve Sanderson (aardvark@illinois.edu) or call 957-6309, by Sunday, September 6 if you plan to attend.

Please note that due to the outstanding response we have decided to move this event to a larger hanger, and we will now be celebrating in Jeff and Ann’s hangar, 240 Cirrus Lane. We look forward to seeing everyone on September 9. This is going to be a great event.

Whiteplains Ten Year Celebration

WHITEPLAINS ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Ten years ago, on 9/9/99, the FAA granted official recognition to Niel Bonacum for the Whiteplains Airport by assigning our official FAA airport identifier: SC99.

Please join with your neighbors for a tenth anniversary celebration to honor Niel and Nancy’s grand vision on Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at 7 PM in Ken and Peg’s hangar (393 Whiteplains Place).

A BBQ dinner will be served… a gift to the community from the individual members of the Board of Directors and the President of the Pilots’ Association.

For after-dinner entertainment, there will be door prizes and Don Cook is assembling a PhotoShow from the early days at Whiteplains, including runway construction.

Whiteplains K-Club Photo Clips

Last weeks group shot.

Who is missing in this picture. Note that everyone is pointing to an empty seat.

Hummm.... must be reserved. Now who would require a such a seat?

Hint: Check out below picture from today's attendees.

Also note the person in the back with a cell phone to his ear.
When John's cell phone rings, you would think that it would Add Video
be for John, right? Nope it was for Jack.
Could that be Jack with a cell phone?

Whiteplains' VASI Check

Visual Approach Slope Indicator (VASI) at the beginning of runway 27 was checked this morning. Ken Plessor (Instructor) gave Don Cook a short training class on how to do this check. Ken said that I did a great job and that can expect my certificate of training in the mail in a few days. Right!

Update: 8-12-2009 Thanks Ken for the fine certifiacate of training.... I got one after all. ;-)

From Drop Box

Nice and level.

Adjust till bubble is centered.

Read scale on side to get angle.

Ken showing proper location of measuring rod.

Just slip it in, till it rest on rail in back and front.
Ken filling out the VASI Check Sheet.

Ken found some wasps in the shed. With the help of Steve Sanderson, they are no longer a concern. Thanks to his small arms training, they didn't have a chance.

With a steady hand, Steve zaps the wasps.

Another Place - Gone Flying $50 Burger

Eric and I flew this weekend to the Pik N Pig in Carthage, NC. The Pik N Pig is located on Gilliam-McConnell Airfield and has a 2500 foot runway (Can land on either grass or paved runway). The resturaunt does have mostly BBQ but also has sandwhiches as well. They have just built a new pavilion so that you can sit and eat under shade and watch the airplanes come and go. They have great BBQ and great prices!!

Link to Pik n Pig is: http://www.pik-n-pig.com/piknpig.html
Warning: If you go they only take cash only!!

Gone Flying

Got a report from Michael Benton that the Spitfire deli at Winder was closed when they flew over for lunch last saturday. Below is what he reported.

Leslie and I flew to Winder on Sat. to eat lunch. The Spitfire deli was closed. We were told by another pilot there to try The Flying Machine Restr. at KLZU Lawrenceville, GA. Its about 14 miles West of Winder. The food was excellent and the prices were fair. Best of all you taxied to the front door. The link to there website is http://www.theflyingmachine.com/ Joy is one of the owners. I told her to contact you and maybe put a link on the neighborhood blog if you were interested. We had a good time. She told us that she heard the Spitfire will be closing down because the FBO wants them to open up for dinner and they want to remain a lunch restr. So, there lease isn’t going to be renewed. She wasn’t sure of it, but that may explain the locked doors. I will say we got there about 15mins prior to closing. Maybe they just took off early. Anyway, my two cents worth.

Michael.

Thanks Michael for your report. If you found that perfect "$100 hamburger" joint, let me know and I'll add it to the blog.

Willem & Alice Meiners Helicopter Crashed

Willem reported that their helicopter crashed yesterday with four on board that didn't make it. They are safe and weren't on the helicopter when it crashed alongside the interstate. For more information click on the following link. Three of the people on board where friends of the Meiners, and our prayers go out to them.
